3D printing at the service of animals
A forest fire burned the carapace of the turtle Freddy in Brazil, and their chances of survival were small when a team led by designer Cicero Moraes, an animal rights volunteer, made contact with the animal. Known as Animal Avengers, the group created a 3D carapace that eventually saved the animal.
“Freddy is the first tortoise in the world to receive a fully rebuilt carapace and the first creature our newly formed group has decided to help,” explained Cicero, who designed the carapace in a computer image that was based on several photographs that he Freddy himself took it out.
He then sent the design to dental surgeon Paulo Miamoto, who turned it into reality through a 3D printer. Today, Freddy is a turtle like any other, and will certainly live for a few tens of years.
