Two US soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan in clashes with extremist Islamic state “jihadists”, the Pentagon announced Thursday.

“Two soldiers were killed in action last night in Nangarhar, in [eastern] Afghanistan, in an operation against the Islamic state – Khorasan,” Defense spokesman Jeff Davis said in a statement.

US troops in Afghanistan, on a training mission for Afghan forces, have participated in recent months in fighting against elements of the Islamic state – Khorasan.

About two weeks ago, the United States launched the so-called “mother of all bombs” against an Islamic state compound in Nangarhar, days after a U.S. Special Forces soldier was killed in the area.

The United States estimates that the Islamic State has about 800 combatants in Afghanistan.
