The US President, Barack Obama, today assured his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the United States will help to judge those responsible for the coup of July 15 last.
“Let us ensure that those who carried out these activities are brought to justice,” Obama said during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit, which takes place today and on Monday in Hangzhou, China.
Erdogan accuses former imam Fethullah Gülen, exiled in the United States since 1999, of masterminding the coup in Turkey.
Relations between Turkey and the United States have been strained since the coup and Ankara have stepped up calls for the extradition of Gülen.
The US vice president, Joe Biden, traveled to Ankara last August 24 to express understanding of the United States before the “intense feelings” of the government and the Turkish people against the former imam, but called Turkey to provide more information so you can get his extradition.
