Madrid’s Crystal Palace turns into kaleidoscope
The Korean multimedia artist Kimsooja is known for creating installations using existing architecture, light and sound. In her work “To Breathe: A Mirror Woman,” Kimsooja transformed the Palacio de Cristal del Retiro in Madrid into a kaleidoscope whose visual effect is accompanied by a sound landscape created by the artist.
The greenhouse that now hosts the exhibition usually houses a collection of plants
From the Philippines. Kimsooja transformed this space into a sensory experience, covering the glass of the greenhouse with a translucent diffraction film. This material diffracts the solar rays, which are reflected in the mirrored surface that covers the entire floor.
Kimsooja presented a similar project at the Venice Biennale in 2013, which also used the translucent film to color the interior of the Korean pavilion during the event.
