The Polish athlete auctioned off his medal to help children with cancer.
Piotr Malachowski won the silver medal in discus throwing category at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and decided to auction it to pay for treatment of a boy of three years, Olek Szymanski, who had an eye cancer.
The athlete had announced the act of solidarity but is now alert to the end of the auction, since the value of the treatments has been reached and will cover all necessary expenses.
So far it is not known how it was acquired the medal but the act of philanthropy was awarded to Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk – one of the richest couples in Poland – and it is known that on Tuesday were already raised about 14 000 euros.
Malachowski had said it would take about 23,000 euros, because the treatment costs about 35,000 euros but Siepomaga foundation provided part of the value.
The sportsman was touched by the boy’s mother shortly after securing second place in the race, and Malachowski stressed that, since he had not gotten the gold, there was no better way to increase the value of his medal.
