These eucalyptus look like a work of art created by a painter with a taste for strong colors. However, the coloring of these trees is natural and assumes the appearance of a rainbow when it loses the outer house that lines the trunk, revealing “brushstrokes” of green, orange and purple.
The phenomenon happens at different times of the year and when the eucalyptus loses the surrounding house, the inner layer of the trunk darkens and acquires the colored patterns.
The images were collected by an amateur photographer on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, who went looking for trees while on vacation. “When I saw the trees, my initial reaction was astonished. I’ve never seen tree trunks so colorful, “says Warren Krupsaw.
This species of eucalyptus may be native to the northern hemisphere, but can also be found in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
