The US president congratulated the new president of the National Democratic Committee, Hispanic Tom Pérez, on Saturday and said he would bring benefits to the Republican Party, alluding to Pérez’s affinity with the traditional wing of the Democrats.
“Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been nominated DNC president. I could not be happier for him and for the Republican Party,” Donald Trump said on Twitter.
Trump has said on several occasions that in the November election he was able to capture the vote of discontent from progressive senator Bernie Sanders, who played Democratic primaries with Hillary Clinton, considered part of the Democratic Party’s old guard.
Perez himself was considered part of the party’s “system” because of the support he gave to Hillary Clinton during the primaries process and the fact that she nominated him as a running mate, a position that ended in the hands of Sen. Tim Kaine.
In an effort to unravel the image and seduce the progressives of Senator Bernie Sanders, Tom Perez came for his team to Congressman Keith Ellison, an African American, a Muslim who had received the support of the progressive wing.
In a Twitter social network message, Perez responded to Trump’s message, and advised him not to “be very happy” and promised that he, Ellison, and the rest of the Democrats in the country, will become his “worst nightmare “.
Former US President Barack Obama said Saturday that new Democratic Party leader Tom Perez will be able to unite the party and renew it with the new generations.
“I know that Tom Perez will bring us together under a banner of opportunity and lay the foundations for a new generation of Democratic leadership,” Obama said in a statement.
Tom Perez, son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, was Secretary of State for Labor of the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017.
