Police believe it was ash from a cremation.

The Metropolitan Opera of New York canceled a performance yesterday afternoon after a man had thrown ashes on the orchestra during the beginning of the show. Police believe the ash resulting from a cremation.

According to Reuters, several witnesses have heard the man say he was at the opera to cast the ashes of his mentor.

The concert hall was evacuated following the incident, which did not result in injuries or allergic reactions. The afternoon show was void and the evening turned out to also be canceled.

The man who threw the ashes can leave the theater and has not yet been arrested.
