In the appeal, issued at their annual meeting in Baltimore, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops stressed that serving and welcoming people fleeing conflict and violence is part of their identity as Roman Catholics and will continue to offer this help.

Trump adopted a radical discourse on immigration during the presidential campaign, in which he promised to build a wall along the United States border with Mexico and deport the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country.

He later distanced himself from the allegations, saying in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” television program on Sunday night that he would focus on deporting people with criminal records, as well as immigrants.
